BASIC ABOUT BISOPROLOL

Bisoprolol is a type of medication called a beta-blocker that works by blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart. This slows the heart rate and reduces the force of its contractions, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the heart's workload. The heart & stress response.

  • Adrenergic receptors: Adrenergic receptors are proteins that act as receivers for stress hormones, like adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline.
  • Beta-1 receptors: Beta-1 receptors are found mainly in the heart and kidneys. When stimulated by stress hormones, they trigger a chain of events that increase heart rate and the strength of heart muscle contractions.
  • Increased cardiac workload: This increased heart activity leads to higher blood pressure and greater oxygen consumption by the heart muscle.

Bisoprolols mechanism of action

  • Blocks beta-1 receptors: As a cardioselective beta-1 blocker, bisoprolol specifically attaches to and blocks these beta-1 receptors in the heart. This prevents stress hormones from binding and activating them.
  • Slows heart rate: By blocking the beta-1 receptors, bisoprolol has a negative chronotropic effect, which means it slows the heart rate.
  • Reduces force of contraction: It also has a negative inotropic effect, meaning it decreases the force with which the heart muscle contracts.
  • Decreases renin release: Bisoprolols action on beta-1 receptors in the kidneys also reduces the release of renin, a hormone that influences blood pressure.

The resulting therapeutic effects

  • Lowered blood pressure: The combination of a slower heart rate and reduced force of contraction lessens the pressure inside your blood vessels.
  • Reduced cardiac workload: With less work to do, the heart requires less oxygen. This is particularly beneficial for conditions like angina, or chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.
  • Improved cardiovascular health: This overall reduction in heart stress makes bisoprolol an effective treatment for a range of conditions, including hypertension and heart failure.

Bisoprolol is used in the treatment of Hypertension (high blood pressure), Angina (heart- related chest pain) and Arrhythmia.

How Bisoprolol works

Bisoprolol is a beta blocker that works specifically on the heart. It works by slowing down the heart rate and makes the heart more efficient at pumping blood around the body.
