Pantoprazole 40 mg injection is called Panidume- 40mg Injection. It is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Uses

Pantoprazole injections are for short-term use in adults and are given when oral tablets are not an option. It is prescribed to treat conditions related to excessive stomach acid, including:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):Also known as acid reflux, this occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and damage.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:A rare condition where the stomach produces too much acid due to pancreatic tumors.
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease:It promotes the healing of ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.
  • Prevention of NSAID-induced ulcers:It can protect against stomach ulcers for patients on long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). 

Dosage and administration

  • Administration:It is administered into a vein by a healthcare professional in a medical setting. It should not be self-administered.
  • Standard dose:For conditions like GERD, the typical dose is 40 mg once daily for up to 10 days.
  • Switching to oral:The injection is used until a patient can switch to an oral pantoprazole tablet, which is usually within 7 to 10 days.

Side effects

Common side effects of pantoprazole injection include:

  • Pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site (thrombophlebitis)
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Joint pain

Important safety information

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding:Consult a doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Its use is generally avoided during pregnancy unless necessary.
  • Long-term use risks:Use for more than one year may increase the risk of bone fractures and lead to deficiencies in magnesium and Vitamin B12.
  • Medical conditions:Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, osteoporosis, or are taking medications for HIV, as these can affect how pantoprazole works.
  • Alcohol consumption:Avoid alcohol, as it increases stomach acid and can worsen your symptoms.
